Recruitment process guide

2. Recruitment options

Alternatives to recruitment

Before you start the recruitment process, you must consider all the different options for ensuring work, projects and services are resourced. For example:

  • have you considered changing / increasing hours to cover the work?
  • could work be re-allocated within the team or elsewhere in the Council?
  • could an acting up arrangement be made?
  • could a secondment be offered to others in the organisation to cover a project?

To find out more about alternative options, contact your designated HR officer.

If you still need to recruit

If there is no suitable alternative, consider what resource is best suited to your requirements. For example:

  • permanent staff
  • temporary staff e.g. fixed term contract, agency, contractor, interim
  • apprentice
  • work experience
  • volunteer

If it is only a temporary position, see the recruit a temporary worker page for guidance on the different options.

Once you have made the decision to recruit, you will not be able to create your vacancy until you have recruitment request approval.
