First aid
First aid can save lives and prevent minor injuries becoming major ones.
You should always call 999 if someone is seriously ill or injured, or their life is at risk.

Manager responsibilities
The Health and Safety First Aid Regulations (1981) require managers to assess the risks which may lead to the need for first aid and to provide accordingly, that is:
- complete a first aid risk assessment
- identify how many first aiders you need/their level of qualification - using the risk assessment and dependent on the type of work carried out and potential hazards
- display the names of first aiders and their location/phone number prominently in the workplace
- indicate the location of first aid equipment by a sign showing a white cross on a green background
You should also have efficient arrangements for summoning emergency services.
For more information, see the first aid guidance note (MS Word, 202KB).
First aid kits
There is no mandatory list of items for a first aid kit. Managers must decide what to include based on a risk assessment of first aid needs for their area. Where no special risks arise in the workplace, refer to Guidance note section 6 of first aid guidance note (MS Word, 202KB).
The first aider or emergency aider is responsible for keeping the kit well stocked.
