Apprenticeship scheme guide
Overview
An apprenticeship is paid employment involving both on the job training and study towards a recognised apprenticeship standard qualification. Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 and above who wants an opportunity to learn, earn and develop.
Apprenticeship learning takes place on the job, providing a combination of practical skills and theoretical knowledge. Apprentices are given a minimum of 6 hours per week as off the job learning as part of their working week. Off the job learning may consist of:
- Online or classroom-based teaching
- Lectures
- Practical training
- Shadowing
- Mentoring
- Industry visits
- Learning support
Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level. Apprenticeships vary in levels with qualifications beginning from Level 2, GCSE equivalent, all the way through to Level 7, master’s degree equivalent.
Cheshire East Council now pays a levy to fund the training of apprenticeships across the organisation. Apprenticeships can either be a new position in the Council, or they can be undertaken by current staff who wish to upskill in their current role.
The presentation below, voiced by Kris Crawford (Senior Workforce Development Officer), provides more information on apprenticeships at Cheshire East Council.

The role of a Line Manager
As apprentices are expected to learn and develop throughout their apprenticeship, it is important line managers understand the role that they play in terms of the provision of structure, coaching, monitoring, direction, and support.
The guide below has been put together to support line managers who have an apprentice. You can also email apprenticeships@cheshireeast.gov.uk if you have any questions or need further advice and guidance.
