Strategic priorities, projects and programmes

Strategic priorities

We are committed to delivering the best value services and improving the outcomes for our residents. Our focus is on the following key areas:

Budget and financial management

Effective budget and financial management are key to maintaining a balanced budget while delivering high quality services. We must prioritise our spending to maximise the outcomes for our communities, ensure that the people with additional needs are supported, and provide clear and accessible information on how and why we spend money in the way that we do.

Transformation plan

Our transformation plan aims to create a financially stable organisation by improving efficiency, reducing costs and enhancing service delivery. We now need to propel our organisation towards a radically different future which is more customer focused, efficient and cost effective. We will do this through six programmes of work, each of which having a number of projects within it.

Children’s Services Improvement Plan

The Children’s Services Improvement Plan aims to enhance safeguarding, education, and family support. To address the latest Ofsted inspection which rated areas of our services as inadequate.

Devolution in Cheshire and Warrington

Devolution offers a powerful voice for growth in Cheshire and Warrington, to bring better jobs, better transport and smarter investment.  It is about recognising that decisions about investment in our local area are best made locally, by leaders who understand the area and are at the heart of our communities. It’s not about merging councils or taking decisions away from councils. Individual councils would retain most of their current responsibilities and continue to provide services for local people.

Corporate Peer Challenge (action plan)

We invited the Local Government Association to undertake a corporate peer challenge of the council in March 2024. The peer challenge report was published in July 2024 and contained 18 recommendations.
